Three-satellite Chinese radar constellation threatens US naval operational security

Chinese researchers have demonstrated that synthetic aperture radar satellites in geostationary orbit can achieve 24/7 all-weather tracking of high-value maritime targets — including carrier strike groups — with just three satellites, versus hundreds or thousands required by conventional approaches. This is a force-multiplier asymmetry: China can achieve near-complete maritime domain awareness at a fraction of the constellation cost, fundamentally altering the calculus of US naval power projection in the Western Pacific. The capability directly undermines the assumption that US carrier groups can operate with meaningful concealment during conflict scenarios.
